J-SHINE® – Japan Shogakko (Elementary School) English Instructors, is the official Japanese body responsible for conferring certification to individuals aspiring to work as English teachers in Japanese elementary schools. Following the mandatory introduction of English education in Japanese public elementary schools in 2011, the demand for proficient educators has surged significantly. This program equips graduates with the qualifications to instruct children in both private and public educational settings.

Language of Instruction: The course is conducted in both Japanese and English.

Monday to Friday – 8:50 am to 3:20 pm
PTIB Approved Program
The J-SHINE program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
6 weeks in duration, Full-time
150-hour academic study program, supplemented by a 50-hour practicum. This included:
- Four weeks of intensive academic study
- Two weeks of hands-on practicum at a daycare facility in Metro Vancouver.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Students must be 20 years of age and above
- Students must reach an IELTS 7.0 or CEFR C1 or equivalent
- Successful completion of interview with a qualified CELTA instructor, either online or in person
Intermediate Level
- Must reach an IELTS 5.5 or TOEIC 500 or equivalent or complete IH Level 4 Lower Intermediate (B1.1)
Upper Intermediate Level
- Must reach an IELTS 6.0 or TOEIC 650 or equivalent or complete IH Level 6 Upper Intermediate (B2)

Daily Schedule
What is the schedule like?
Class Days: Classes are held from Monday to Friday.
Class Hours: The course runs from 8:50 AM to 3:20 PM daily.
Duration: The course spans 4 weeks.
Language Split: The curriculum is evenly divided, with half of the instruction in Japanese and the other half in English.
Practicum: There is an opportunity for a 2-week practicum experience at a daycare facility in Metro-Vancouver.
Unique Learning Experience: IH offers an intensive course that provides students with hands-on learning under the guidance of experienced instructors, including the option for a practicum.
Curriculum
This module consists of a written exam of two 90-minute papers which focuses on the background to teaching and learning English in a range of contexts. Our integrated course provides input sessions covering all the relevant topics as well as exam strategies and practice to ensure success.
This module focuses on the principles and practice of planning and teaching and consists of a portfolio of coursework including a professional development assignment, background essays and assessed teaching practice. As well as observing lessons, you will prepare, teach and evaluate four lessons – one is externally assessed by a Cambridge English assessor.

Its goals and contents – Children in class (video) | The Japanese part will be focused on teaching Japanese in the public elementary school system. By the end of the session, students will have a deep understanding of the national curriculum and be able to conduct lessons following the aims of the English education in public schools. |

12:30 – 3:20 | English Part Micro-Teaching on Giving instructions | The English part provides many classroom ideas such as songs, games and activities for young learners. You will have many chances for micro-teaching on different tasks (instructions, vocabulary presentation, etc). There, you will prepare short lessons and practice teaching with peers. |
