DELTA, the Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, signifies the pinnacle of English language teaching qualifications. What is the schedule like?

DELTA is made up of three independent modules to provide maximum flexibility. At IH Vancouver, we offer an intensive 10-week course which covers all three modules at one time. However, candidates seeking to take just one module at a time may do so.

The integrated DELTA is an intensive course designed to maximize your time and to thoroughly prepare candidates for all three modules. The integrated course is entirely face-to-face at IH Vancouver and consists of,

  • Full-time course with over 200 contact hours over 10 weeks
  • Held from Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm
  • 4 hours of assessed teaching practice of real students at two different levels including an externally assessed lesson by Cambridge
  • 10 hours of unassessed teaching practice
  • 10 hours observing other experienced teachers

Admission Requirements
  • Students must complete high school or be a mature student 18 years and above
  • Students must reach an IELTS 7.0 or CEFR C1 or equivalent
  • Successful completion of interview with a qualified DELTA instructor, either online or in person
  • Students must have an initial English language teaching (ELT) qualification, such as CELTA.
  • Students must have at least one year’s ELT experience

DELTA Flexibility at IH Vancouver

  • Integrated DELTA: A 10-week full-time course, Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.

    • Covers all three modules.
    • Includes over 200 contact hours.

Curriculum

While IH Vancouver offers an integrated course, DELTA comprises three independent modules, each with its specific focus on language teaching. Successful completion of each module earns you a certificate and credit. Upon passing all three modules, you receive an overall certificate.

Module 1 | Understanding language, methodology and resources for teaching |

This module consists of a written exam of two 90-minute papers which focuses on the background to teaching and learning English in a range of contexts. Our integrated course provides input sessions covering all the relevant topics as well as exam strategies and practice to ensure success.

 

Module 2 | Developing professional practice |

This module focuses on the principles and practice of planning and teaching and consists of a portfolio of coursework including a professional development assignment, background essays and assessed teaching practice. As well as observing lessons, you will prepare, teach and evaluate four lessons – one is externally assessed by a Cambridge English assessor.

Module 3 | English language teaching or management specialism |

This module focuses on the principles and practice of planning and teaching and consists of a portfolio of coursework including a professional development assignment, background essays and assessed teaching practice. As well as observing lessons, you will prepare, teach and evaluate four lessons – one is externally assessed by a Cambridge English assessor.

9.00 – 10.15Input session #1: Classroom managementEvery day there are two input session given by one of the course tutors. Input sessions cover a range of topics dealing with learner needs, language, skills, teaching techniques, planning, professional development, etc. All CELTA centres create their input sessions to cover the syllabus set out by Cambridge.

11.45 – 12.30Teaching Practice PreparationThis time is devoted to providing you support for your upcoming lessons. There is one trainer for a maximum of six candidates to ensure ample time for individualized support. As the course progresses, you will learn to become more autonomous and to plan more independently, just like in the real teaching world!
12.30 – 1.30LunchA much needed break and a chance to make any last minute preparations for your lessons!
1.30 – 3.30Teaching PracticeTeaching Practice is when you literally practice teaching with a specially arranged group of students; it’s the time to try out the ideas you’ve seen or learned in input and it’s a chance for you to develop your teaching and get feedback on what you do. For half the course you will be teaching elementary students and for half the course intermediate students. Likewise, one tutor will observe half of your lessons and another tutor the other half. Each candidate teaches a total of eight lessons over the four weeks.
3.30 – 3.45BreakA short break and a chance to reflect on the lessons that have just taken place.
3.45 – 4.30FeedbackWith your peers and tutor, this session is a chance to discuss the lessons, build upon the strengths, and look at areas for improvement and possible ideas for doing so.
4.30 – 5.00Wrap-up30 minutes at the end of day for any final questions, course admin, or anything else that needs to be discussed. You might even get out early from time to time!
