What is CELTA?

CELTA – Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – is quite simply the most widely recognized and highly-respected initial English language teaching qualification. The course is awarded by the prestigious Cambridge University (Cambridge English Language Assessment) and opens doors to English language teaching jobs around the world. CELTA at IH Career College is also recognized by TESL Canada.

What is the schedule like?

In Person

This is an in-person class with a mix of teaching practice in a face-to-face classes. Trainees must be in Vancouver to take this format.Classes are held Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00.

Mixed

Full-time Mixed (5 weeks):  This is a mixed in-person  and online course teaching with practice in both face-to-face classes and in an online class environment. Trainees must be in Vancouver to take this format.Classes are held Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00.

Online:

All online CELTA courses are a mix of live online sessions over Zoom, which includes the teaching practice, and asynchronous study on the CELTA Moodle platform.

Full-time Online (6 weeks):     Currently not offered.

Part-time Online (10 weeks):     This is a fully online course. The live sessions are held on Zoom every Tuesday and  Thursday from 17:00 to 21:00 Vancouver local time.

Part-time Online (14 weeks):     This is a fully online course. The live sessions are held on Zoom every Saturday from 9:00 to 14:30 Vancouver local time. There is one evening per week where live session is also held with the trainers.

Admission Requirements
  • Students must complete high school or be a mature student 18 years and above
  • Students must reach an IELTS 7.0 or CEFR C1 or equivalent
  • Successful completion of interview with a qualified CELTA instructor, either online or in person

Daily Schedule

Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00.

CELTA is an intensive course designed to maximize your time and to thoroughly prepare you for your future teaching.

  • Full-time course with 120 contact hours over the duration of the course
  • Held from Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, in person. Inquire for online schedule
  • 6 hours of observed teaching practice of real students at two different levels
  • 6 hours observing other experienced teachers

9:00 – 10:15Input session #1: Classroom managementEvery day there are two input session given by one of the course tutors. Input sessions cover a range of topics dealing with learner needs, language, skills, teaching techniques, planning, professional development, etc. All CELTA centres create their input sessions to cover the syllabus set out by Cambridge.

11:45 – 12:30Teaching Practice PreparationThis time is devoted to providing you support for your upcoming lessons. There is one trainer for a maximum of six candidates to ensure ample time for individualized support. As the course progresses, you will learn to become more autonomous and to plan more independently, just like in the real teaching world!
12:30 – 1:30LunchA much needed break and a chance to make any last minute preparations for your lessons!
1:30 – 3:30Teaching PracticeTeaching Practice is when you literally practice teaching with a specially arranged group of students; it’s the time to try out the ideas you’ve seen or learned in input and it’s a chance for you to develop your teaching and get feedback on what you do. For half the course you will be teaching elementary students and for half the course intermediate students. Likewise, one tutor will observe half of your lessons and another tutor the other half. Each candidate teaches a total of eight lessons over the four weeks.
3:30 – 3:45BreakA short break and a chance to reflect on the lessons that have just taken place.
3:45 – 4:30FeedbackWith your peers and tutor, this session is a chance to discuss the lessons, build upon the strengths, and look at areas for improvement and possible ideas for doing so.
4:30 – 5:00Wrap-up30 minutes at the end of day for any final questions, course admin, or anything else that needs to be discussed. You might even get out early from time to time!
