IHC in TESL is an intensive full-time course designed to maximize your time and to thoroughly prepare you for your future teaching.
• Full-time course with 130 contact hours over 4 weeks
• Held from Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm
Practicum includes:*
• Minimum 6 hours of observation of experienced ESL teachers in a variety of classes and levels over four weeks
• Minimum 6 hours of Teaching Practice over at least 8 lessons in the 4 weeks, teaching real language learners over four weeks
• Compulsory 2-day post course class observation and teaching practice ( four hours of each)
*To qualify for TESL Canada Professional Standard One certificate, Candidates of IHC TESL are required to fulfill a 20-hour practicum (10 hours Observation + 10 hours Teaching

Curriculum
Although IH Vancouver provides an integrated course, TESL, each concentrating on distinct aspects of language teaching. Completing each module results in a certificate and credit. Achieving success in all three modules grants an overall certificate.

PTIB Approved Program
The TESL program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
4 weeks in duration, Full-time
Accomplished 130 hours of academic study, which includes:
12-hour practicum consisting of:
- 6 hours observing experienced ESL teachers across various classes and levels over a span of four weeks
- 6 hours of teaching practice conducted over at least 8 lessons in four weeks, instructing real language learners
- Mandatory 2-day post-course class observation and teaching practice, dedicating four hours to each
To earn the TESL Professional Standard One certificate, completed an additional 130 hours of academic study, inclusive of a 20-hour practicum, which comprised 10 hours of class observation and 10 hours of teaching practice.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Students must be 20 years of age and above
- Students must reach an IELTS 6.5 or CEFR B2 Upper Intermediate or equivalent
- Successful completion of interview with a qualified TESL instructor, either online or in person

12:45 – 1:30 | Teaching Practice Preparation | This time is devoted to providing you support for your upcoming lessons. There is one trainer for a maximum of six candidates to ensure ample time for individualized support. As the course progresses, you will learn to become more autonomous and to plan more independently, just like in the real teaching world! |
1:30 – 3:30 | Teaching Practice | Teaching Practice is held every day. You will work together with other trainees to teach groups of ESL students. Each candidate teaches a minimum of eight lessons with a minimum of 6 hours over the four weeks. These lessons will be observed by one of the trainers. |
3:30 – 3:45 | Break | |
3:45 – 4:30 | Feedback | With your peers and tutor, this session is a chance to discuss the lessons, build upon the strengths, and look at areas for improvement and possible ideas for doing so. |
4:30 – 5:00 | Wrap-up | 30 minutes at the end of day for any final questions, course admin, or anything else that needs to be discussed, including providing you support for your upcoming lessons. |
